The Elite Retreat Sauna - Bristol

I visited this sauna on a recent trip to the West Country. Having visited “The Village Sauna” some years ago and not being very impressed, I decided to try The Elite Retreat, which has only been open a fairly short while. It is situated in an industrial area and looks as though it was a pub in a previous incarnation and its location is not too easy to get to unless you have a car, although there is a bus from Temple Meades Station, the 506 which stops about 150 yards away in Kingsland Road, with the stop just past Sussex Street. This bus seems to run about every 30 minutes, but watch the time for catching the return bus as they do not seem to run much after 7pm and there are no buses on Sundays. There is parking behind the sauna, but if this is full, there appear to be only a few on-road parking spaces around and many double yellow-lines.

The building is old and a bit like a “rabbit warren” - due to its age, it must be quite difficult to keep clean. On the Ground Floor is the Reception Area with TV and the locker room with fairly small lockers – so think twice about taking an overcoat! Off the locker room are the toilets. The showers and the Jacuzzi are also on this floor with the sauna and steam room is a separate section with a cold shower.

Upstairs there is access to an external smoking/sunbathing area, off the pool table room. There is a small porno video room with various darkrooms, cubicles etc.

The “punters” are of mixed ages, ranging on the day I visited to from 25 to over 70 with a preponderance of older men. I think that the place has potential, but it requires a bit of “tender loving care” to make it feel welcoming. If I had the choice, I think I would prefer to go here rather than the Village.

This gay sauna was regarded as a welcome alternative in Bristol to the Cottage Sauna when it opened in May 2013. Since then I have been there many times opened but unfortunately it has been neglected by the owners. It has now gone downhill to the point where I would rather drive 40 miles to a decent gay sauna in Newport or Swindon, than go to Elite Retreat again.
Elite Retreat is extremely badly managed.
As examples, the soap dispensers are frequently empty, towels are not collected; the staff are far more interested in playing their choice of music too loudly than create an atmosphere to suit the customers. Inside the premises are untidy, dirty and mouldy. Much of the floor is covered in blotches of paint.
A few months ago I emailed the management to complain about the state of the place – the lavatory doors, the endlessly dripping shower next to the Jacuzzi, and the soaking roof top Astroturf which was so waterlogged that the flat roof below it must have been close to collapse. The result was zero response. No reply.
Even now, two of the three toilet doors do not close properly, and the middle shower still sticks on.
Recently the web site announced that Elite Retreat would be closed for a few days for improvements. When it reopened the Jacuzzi was not working. It did not work at all for a month.
The management make almost no attempt to contact their customers; we were never told via the website or social media that the steam room was going to be closed over two weeks ago, but last time I visited it was.
Today I asked if everything was working and was told that it all was except the steam room, which is still not working after 3 weeks. The guy on the door lied; the Jacuzzi is still not working properly; 2 of the four air pump controls do not operate as they should.
When Elite Retreat first opened, the Sunday buffet used to be very nice. It included Sushi! It still includes fruit, which is nice but the sushi has been replaced by tasteless white sandwiches, which are clearly made from the cheapest materials. You cannot tell by colour or taste whether you are eating ham or cheese.
Even the web site is appalling. It is bland and misleading; the Twitter link is incorrect. Once you find it, you will see that the correct Twitter page has not been updated since May 2013. The Facebook page has not been updated by the proprietors since May 2014. It wrongly states that Elite Retreat is open 24 hours. Two extremely negative reviews were posted on it on 14/1/15 by other customers who have also had enough of the place. I suspect they will be deleted by the owners.

Gaybod always recommends that visitors who have complaints about venues try to contact the owners of saunas before writing of their dissatisfaction. Timbo has apparently tried to do this in this case but seems to have had no success in obtaining any improvement. It is extremely annoying, if customers have come some distance, to find that some facilities as advertised are not in working order. Some reduction in the entrance fee might be considered to compensate for this

Hi Peteswuk
I was in Bristol on a fleeting visit last week and decided to pop into Elite Retreat, the new sauna. I'd checked it out on-line and it seemed v good.
It was OK, but, to be honest, a bit of a let-down. Having read some of the comments about the other sauna in Bristol and the shut-down one in Bath, it probably is better, but, from Elite's web-site blurb I was expecting something really swish. The main areas - sauna, steam-room, jacuzzi, private rooms, glory-holes - are good, but the rest of the area is a bit shabby, although clean.
The receptionist was the only member of staff in there and, given that there are two floors plus the roof garden, how clean it would be kept if it was busy would be debatable. At one stage he was clearing the rubbish from the roof garden and I heard the door bell ringing continuously. I'm not sure whether the customer got fed-up and left, or if he did finally gain admittance.
I was also surprised that there are no films showng at all, either 18 or R18 and it is the first sauna that I have been in for years like this. One guy who I chatted to also mentioned this fact and said that he was disappointed. To give the management the benefit of the doubt I wondered whether it was a licensing restriction. Also there are two condoms and lube sachets in the lockers, but none anywhere else. That was OK for me on that day because it was virtually empty. (I overheard the guy on the door talking to the owner by phone and saying that there had been ten people in since it opened that day; that was just before I left at 4pm, having been there a good three hours.) If the sauna had been fuller and I had been luckier I would have preferred to have had condoms and lube in the rooms as well; as it was I didn't need them. :-(
Also, in one of the rooms there was a shower (nice touch there) which didn't work (nice touch wasted!). Given that it's only been open a few weeks and I imagine that they're trying to drum up trade that could be a bit worrying.
Their web-site said that Tuesdays were a no towel day. I was given a towel, but decided not to wear it initially, but as every other guy who was in there was wearing one I decided to put it on as well. Shame, because I quite like flaunting my bits and checking out everybody elses as well!
Overall, given the lack of clientele (prob not their fault as it was early afternoon), slightly scruffy air and no films I would give it 4/10. If I'm back in Bristol again, I might try it out during an evening and see what it's like again, but I won't be going out of my way to get there.
I wish them good luck, though.

I went to Elite Retreat on Sunday afternoon and I liked it.

Great showers. Hot tub looks good but I never go in them. There were sandwiches and fruit laid out which I think is a Sunday thing.

I like the private rooms. Can lock and each has a raised platform for the bed. This was a big bonus. The other 2 saunas I've been too it's all flat. These made for more fun. The room I used had a large mirror on one of the walls. Very hot.

There are some glory holes, a sling room and a porn room. They were showing good, recent porn.

Can park easily as it's an industrial estate.

Overall 8/10 and I'll be back next time I'm in the area

It looks as though the Elite Retreat sauna in Bristol will soon be showing porno films - see
