TIP: Some saunas in Germany & Austria have an entrance fee and additional fees for towels and sandals/flipflops. So if you want to save a few €'s take your own towel and footwear
You may come across the strange ritual of “Ausguss" where the sauna cabin is emptied of people and the organiser of the “Ausguss” flicks water around the walls and on the stove usually with some scented essence. The participants then all rush into the sauna and close the door for about 20 minutes with the “Ausguss Notice” hung on the entrance until they overheat and have to leave.
Whilst the Notice is on the door, you are not allowed to enter on “pain of death”! Is the prime reason to show how macho the Germans are? - difficult to tell!
If you live in, or visit Germany and have visited any of its Saunas add an account of your experiences but please take note of our guidelines posted at the head of this page. In your review please include location and web address if known. Advance thanks for any contributions made.
